Life Transition Stress

You're not lost. You're between maps.

Moves, breakups, graduations, layoffs, new babies, immigration, coming out, career pivots — even chosen transitions grieve the version of you that ended. That grief is real, and it's not a failure.

Also shows up as: Adjustment stress · Liminal space · Identity shift

Transitions are one of the most consistent triggers of anxiety and depressive episodes.

Signs it's showing up

  • Feeling unmoored, foggy, or oddly numb
  • Grieving something you also chose
  • Sleep disrupted around the change
  • Old coping strategies suddenly don't work
  • Comparison spiraling on social media

How it shows up day-to-day

  • "You don't know who you are without the old title, city, or relationship"
  • "Small decisions feel enormous"
  • "Everyone congratulates you and you feel guilty for not feeling good"
  • "You keep trying to rush yourself to 'settled'"
Practices

What actually helps

Tools you can try today — not vague advice.

01

Honor the ending

Rituals matter. A walk through the old neighborhood, a last dinner, a letter you don't send. Endings you don't grieve leak into the next chapter.

02

Protect three anchors

In chaos, keep three things stable — sleep time, one daily walk, one weekly person. Anchors let the rest of you move.

03

Lower the bar on purpose

Transition weeks are not the time for a new diet, sobriety attempt, or fitness overhaul. 'Boring and functional' is the goal.

04

Timebox the not-knowing

Give yourself an explicit season ('I'm figuring this out through spring') so the ambiguity has an edge.

Practical moves

Turn insight into action

Scripts, structures, and asks — at work, in relationships, and for your body.

Structure

  • Weekly planning session for the next 90 days only
  • Say no to nonessential commitments for a defined stretch
  • Batch admin (banks, insurance, forms) into one weekly window

Support

  • One therapist or coach for this chapter, not forever
  • A peer group of people in a similar transition
  • A mentor who's on the other side of it

At work

  • Tell your manager you're in a life transition without oversharing
  • Use accrued PTO in small chunks, not one big block
  • Delay stretch assignments until you've landed

When to reach for more support

  • Symptoms have lasted more than a few months
  • You're isolating from everyone
  • You're drinking or using to cope
  • You're having thoughts of self-harm — call or text 988
